Shirobasti Ayurvedic Treatment in Pune – Deep Relief for Migraine, Insomnia & Nervous System Disorders
At Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre, we offer Shirobasti — the most potent of Ayurveda's four classical Murdha Taila (head-oiling) therapies — where warm medicated oil is held in a reservoir over the scalp to calm the nervous system, ease chronic headaches and migraines, and restore restful sleep.
Ayurvedic Head Therapy
What is Shirobasti Treatment?
Shirobasti (also spelled Shiro Vasti) is a specialised Ayurvedic procedure in which warm, medicated oil is retained over the scalp within a raised reservoir for a fixed duration, allowing the oil to penetrate deep into the skin, cranial tissues, and underlying nerve pathways. The word "Shiro" means head, and "Basti" refers to the technique of holding a liquid medicament within a contained space — a principle borrowed from Ayurveda's most powerful Panchakarma procedure, Basti.
Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Murdha Taila (literally, "oil therapy for the head") as consisting of four progressively deeper procedures: Shiro Abhyanga, Shiro Seka, Shiro Pichu, and Shiro Basti — with the classical verse "अभ्यङ्गसेकपिचवो बस्तिश्चेति चतुर्विधम्, मूर्ध्नि तैलं बहुगुणं तद्विद्यादुत्तरोत्तरम्" stating that each successive procedure carries greater therapeutic benefit than the one before it. Shirobasti, held on the head the longest and in the most concentrated form, is therefore considered the most potent of all four.

Types of Murdha Taila
Shirobasti & the 4 Classical Ayurvedic Head-Oiling Therapies
Shirobasti is one of four classical head therapies collectively called Murdha Taila. Our doctors select the right one (or a progressive combination) based on the severity and stage of your condition.
Shiro Abhyanga
Warm medicated oil is applied to the scalp and massaged in with specific hand strokes, covering the head, neck, and ears. As part of daily Dinacharya, Shiro Abhyanga stimulates circulation, nourishes hair follicles, and gently pacifies Vata — the gentlest and most foundational of the four Murdha Taila procedures.
Shiro Seka (Shirodhara)
A thin, continuous stream of warm medicated oil, buttermilk, or decoction is poured over the forehead, particularly over the Ajna Marma (third-eye point), for a sustained period. Known popularly as Shirodhara, this therapy is deeply calming for stress, anxiety, and disturbed sleep. Read more on the benefits of Shirodhara →
Shiro Pichu
A soft cotton pad soaked in warm medicated oil is placed over the crown of the head (Brahma Randhra / Murdha) for a sustained period, allowing slow, saturated absorption. Shiro Pichu is often used for localised Vata disorders of the head, facial palsy, and to strengthen the effect of other head therapies.
Shiro Basti
A cylindrical cap made of leather or a leak-proof dough well is fitted around the head, and warm medicated oil is poured in and retained at a level roughly two finger-widths (angula) above the scalp for 30–45 minutes. As the deepest and longest-held of the four procedures, Shiro Basti delivers the most concentrated therapeutic effect for chronic and stubborn neurological conditions.
Shirobasti vs Shirodhara: the two are often confused, but they work differently. Shirodhara (Shiro Seka) is a continuous, gentle stream of oil poured mainly over the forehead — ideal for milder stress and sleep concerns. Shirobasti holds a static, deeper reservoir of oil over the entire scalp for a longer duration, giving it far greater penetration and making it the preferred therapy for chronic migraines, degenerative nerve conditions, and stubborn insomnia. Our doctors at Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre often begin with Shirodhara and progress to Shirobasti as your condition and tolerance allow.
The Ayurvedic Perspective
How Ayurveda Understands the Head & Nervous System
Vata, Marma & the Head
In Ayurveda, the head (Shiras) is regarded as Uttamanga — the most important organ, seat of Prana (life force) and the primary site where Vata dosha governs the nervous system. When Vata becomes aggravated through stress, irregular sleep, excessive screen use, or overwork, it manifests as headaches, migraines, mental restlessness, and disturbed sleep — often with a secondary Pitta component causing heat, irritability, and burning sensations.
The scalp overlies several vital Marma points — Adhipati, Shankha, Sthapani, Sthapani, and Simanta among them — where nerves, blood vessels, and tissues converge. Classical texts describe Murdha Taila as working directly on these Marma points, meaning that oil applied to the scalp can influence the functioning of the central nervous system far more directly than therapy applied elsewhere on the body.
Shirobasti works precisely on this principle: the sustained, saturated contact of warm medicated oil with the scalp allows active herbal compounds to cross into deeper cranial tissues, nourish the Majja dhatu (nerve and marrow tissue), pacify aggravated Vata, and calm the mind — producing effects that are both immediately relaxing and cumulatively restorative.
The Procedure
How Shirobasti is Performed
A gentle, structured process performed under expert supervision — here's what to expect during a Shirobasti session at Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre.
Our Ayurvedic doctor evaluates your neurological history, dosha imbalance, and general health to determine the right medicated oil and treatment duration for you.
A gentle Shiro Abhyanga is performed to relax the scalp muscles and prepare the head for deeper oil retention.
A leather cap or a leak-proof dough boundary is carefully fitted around the head to form a sealed reservoir, roughly 6–8 inches tall.
Lukewarm herbal oil — such as Ksheerabala Taila or Brahmi oil — is gently poured into the cap until it covers the scalp to the prescribed level.
You rest comfortably while the oil is held in place, allowing deep absorption into the scalp and underlying tissue. Oil temperature is monitored and topped up as needed.
Once the session is complete, the oil is carefully drained, and a soothing head massage helps the remaining oil absorb fully.
Patients are advised to rest before a warm-water bath and receive specific instructions on diet, sleep, and follow-up sessions to sustain the therapy's benefits.
