Ayurvedic Nasya Therapy: Rejuvenating Your Respiratory System
Welcome to Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Clinic in Kharadi, Pune, where we offer Nasya, an important therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda and one of the five main treatments in Panchakarma. Nasya is an important therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda, which involves the administration of medicated oils or herbal preparations through the nasal passages. It is one of the five main treatments in Panchakarma and is specifically targeted to balance and treat conditions related to the head, neck, and respiratory system.
Nasya is mainly used to address imbalances of the Prana Vata, the sub-dosha of Vata that governs the functions of the head and neck region. The procedure helps in clearing and opening the nasal passages, sinuses, and channels, thereby promoting better respiratory health and overall well-being.
The Nasya procedure typically involves the following steps
Before Nasya, the individual's head and neck region are gently massaged to stimulate the tissues and prepare them for the Nasya therapy.
The person is given steam therapy or warm fomentation to the face and neck area. This helps to open up the channels and facilitate the absorption of the nasal drops.
The medicated nasal drops are carefully instilled into each nostril while the person is in a reclining position with their head tilted backward. The drops are then inhaled deeply into the nasal passages.
After the Nasya procedure, the person is advised not to immediately blow their nose to allow the medicinal substances to be absorbed effectively. They are also recommended to avoid exposure to cold winds, dust, and other environmental factors that could irritate the nasal passages.
After the preparatory phase, the individual is given a specific herbal purgative preparation to induce controlled purgation. The purgative herbs stimulate the bowels to eliminate accumulated toxins and excess Pitta from the body.
Following Virechana, the person is provided with post-procedural diet and lifestyle recommendations to support the body's recovery and maintain balance. This phase is crucial for rejuvenation and promoting overall well-being.
Benefits of Nasya

– Helps manage conditions like sinusitis, allergies, headaches, and nasal polyps.
– Enhances mental clarity and concentration.
– Can be beneficial for certain neurological conditions and eye problems.

Nasya is generally safe and well-tolerated when performed by qualified Ayurvedic practitioners. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as severe nasal bleeding, recent nasal or head injury, or during menstruation.
Nasya is specifically indicated for the following diseases and conditions
Nasal Polyps :
Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths in the nasal passages that can cause breathing difficulties. Nasya is often used to shrink and manage nasal polyps.
Allergic Rhinitis :
Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, involves nasal inflammation triggered by allergens. Nasya can help alleviate symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion associated with allergic rhinitis.
Neurological Disorders:
Nasya is sometimes employed in Ayurvedic management of certain neurological disorders, as it is believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system.
Insomnia:
Nasya, when combined with specific herbs, can assist in improving sleep quality and alleviating insomnia by promoting relaxation and reducing mental stress.
Eye Disorders:
Certain Nasya formulations may be used to support eye health and manage certain eye conditions, such as dry eyes or eye strain.
Headaches and Migraines:
Nasya can be beneficial for individuals experiencing headaches and migraines. The herbal preparations used in Nasya have soothing and calming effects, which may help reduce headache intensity and frequency.
Sinusitis :
Nasya is highly beneficial for individuals suffering from sinusitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and congestion of the sinuses. The medicated nasal drops help to clear the nasal passages, reduce inflammation, and relieve sinus congestion.
Cognitive Enhancement:
Nasya is believed to have a positive impact on mental clarity, concentration, and cognitive functions. It is often used to enhance memory and promote better focus.
Ayurvedic Nasya: A Path to Improved Breathing and Overall Health
It's important to note that Nasya is not a standalone treatment for these conditions and is often part of a comprehensive Ayurvedic treatment plan. The specific herbal formulations used in Nasya vary based on an individual's dosha constitution and health condition. As with any Ayurvedic therapy, Nasya should only be undertaken under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, who will assess an individual's health needs and determine the appropriate Nasya treatment for their specific condition.
