Understanding Liver Health
What is Fatty Liver Disease?
Fatty Liver, medically known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition in which excess fat builds up inside liver cells, interfering with the liver's ability to filter toxins, metabolise fats, and support digestion. A healthy liver contains very little fat โ when fat exceeds 5โ10% of the liver's weight, it is classified as fatty liver disease. This is one of the most common liver conditions seen today, affecting people who consume alcohol heavily as well as those who consume little to none.
Fatty liver rarely causes noticeable symptoms in its early stages, which is exactly why it often goes undetected until a routine ultrasound or blood test reveals it. Left unmanaged, it can progress silently from simple fat accumulation to inflammation, fibrosis, and eventually cirrhosis. The encouraging news is that Grade 1 and Grade 2 fatty liver are largely reversible with the right combination of Ayurvedic detoxification, herbal support, and disciplined diet and lifestyle correction โ started early, under expert guidance.
In Ayurveda, the liver's functions are governed largely by Ranjaka Pitta (the sub-type of Pitta responsible for blood formation and metabolism) along with Meda dhatu (fat tissue) and Kapha dosha. Fatty liver โ referred to in classical terms as Yakrit Vriddhi or excess Meda accumulation in the liver โ is understood as a result of weakened Agni (digestive fire), Kapha-Meda accumulation, and Pitta imbalance. At Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre, a trusted Ayurvedic clinic in Wagholi and Kharadi, Pune, treatment is built around correcting this root imbalance rather than only managing liver enzyme numbers.

Types of Fatty Liver
Understanding Every Type of Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty liver is not one single condition โ it has distinct types based on cause and severity. Identifying yours precisely is the first step to effective treatment.
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
NAFLD is the most common form of fatty liver and occurs in people who drink little to no alcohol. It is strongly linked with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome. NAFLD often has no symptoms in its early stage and is usually discovered incidentally on an abdominal ultrasound. Read more about our related Ayurvedic Obesity Treatment โ
See treatment options โAlcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD)
AFLD is caused directly by excessive and prolonged alcohol consumption. Alcohol metabolism in the liver produces byproducts that promote fat accumulation and inflammation. If alcohol use continues, AFLD can progress to alcoholic hepatitis and eventually cirrhosis. Explore our Ayurvedic Alcohol De-Addiction Treatment โ
See treatment options โNon-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
NASH is a more severe and progressive form of NAFLD, involving active inflammation and liver cell damage in addition to fat accumulation. If untreated, NASH can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and in rare cases, liver cancer โ making early intervention especially important at this stage.
See treatment options โSeverity Grades
Fatty Liver Grades โ 1, 2 & 3 Explained
Fatty liver is also staged by severity on ultrasound. Your grade determines how intensive your Ayurvedic treatment protocol needs to be.
Grade 1 Fatty Liver
Mild fat accumulation, usually without symptoms. Highly reversible with hepatoprotective herbs like Bhumyamalaki and Kutki, combined with Agni-boosting diet correction. Most patients see enzyme normalisation within a few months.
Grade 2 Fatty Liver
Moderate fat deposits with possible mild inflammation. Responds well to a combined protocol of internal herbal formulations, Panchakarma detox such as Virechana, and structured lifestyle correction โ but needs closer monitoring.
Grade 3 Fatty Liver
Severe, extensive fat accumulation with higher risk of progression toward fibrosis. Requires an intensive, closely supervised Ayurvedic protocol integrated with regular monitoring of liver function tests and ultrasound follow-up.
The Ayurvedic Perspective
How Ayurveda Understands Fatty Liver
Kapha-Meda Accumulation & Weak Agni
In Ayurveda, the liver (Yakrit) is the seat of Ranjaka Pitta, responsible for blood formation, metabolism, and processing of nutrients absorbed from digestion. Fatty liver โ described in classical terms as excess accumulation of Meda dhatu (fat tissue) within the liver โ develops primarily due to a weakened Agni (digestive fire), which fails to properly metabolise fats and produces Ama (undigested metabolic toxins).
This Ama, combined with excess Kapha (heaviness, sluggishness) and disturbed Meda dhatu, gradually deposits as fat within liver tissue. Over time, if Pitta becomes involved, this can progress to inflammation โ the Ayurvedic correlate of NASH โ and eventually to fibrotic changes if left unaddressed.
Our treatment approach at Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre therefore works on three levels: igniting Agni (Deepana-Pachana) to restore proper fat metabolism, eliminating Ama and excess Kapha-Meda through Panchakarma such as Virechana, and protecting and regenerating liver tissue (Yakrit Rasayana) with hepatoprotective herbs โ so the results are lasting, not temporary.
Causes
What Causes Fatty Liver Disease?
Understanding the underlying cause helps our doctors design a treatment plan that addresses your specific risk factors, not just the liver enzyme numbers.
The leading cause of Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD), damaging liver cells over time.
Being overweight or obese significantly increases the risk of developing NAFLD.
Insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels promote fat accumulation in the liver.
High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and abdominal obesity together raise NAFLD risk.
Regular consumption of processed, fried, and sugary foods combined with low physical activity weakens Agni and promotes Meda accumulation.
Some medications, rapid weight loss, and underlying conditions like hypothyroidism can also contribute to fat build-up in the liver.
Symptoms
Common Symptoms of Fatty Liver
Fatty liver often stays silent in its early stages. Recognising these subtle signs early allows for timely Ayurvedic intervention.
Persistent tiredness and weakness that isn't relieved by rest.
A feeling of fullness or dull discomfort in the upper right abdomen.
Unexplained weight loss can occur in more advanced cases.
Reduced interest in food, often linked to sluggish digestion (weak Agni).
A slight yellowish tinge to skin or eyes may appear in advanced stages.
Gas, bloating, and heaviness after meals due to impaired fat metabolism.
Difficulty concentrating, sometimes linked to impaired toxin clearance.
Often the first detectable sign, found incidentally on routine blood tests.

Warm oil massage and herbal steam therapy that support circulation, aid metabolic clearance, and complement internal detox protocols.
A dry herbal powder massage especially useful for Kapha-dominant, overweight patients โ it helps reduce Meda and improve metabolic activity.
Specific asanas and breathing practices are prescribed to stimulate digestion, reduce stress, and support healthy liver function over time.
