Fatty Liver Problems : Ayurvedic Insights

Share On:

introduction :

Fatty liver disease, medically known as hepatic steatosis, is one of the most common liver disorders in modern times. It results from excess fat accumulation in liver cells, reducing the liver’s ability to function optimally. Although it may begin silently, untreated fatty liver can progress to serious conditions such as steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer.

In Ayurveda, fatty liver aligns with Yakrit Roga, primarily caused by Medo Dhatu Dushti, Agni Mandya (weak digestion), and Kapha dosha aggravation. At Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Clinic, our approach involves early diagnosis for fatyy liver problems , lifestyle correction, herbal support, Panchakarma therapies, and long-term wellness planning.

Common Causes of Fatty Liver Disease

Fatty liver disease is classified into two main types:

  • Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): Caused by excessive alcohol consumption, damaging liver cells.
  • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. It is linked to obesity, poor diet, insulin resistance, and sedentary habits.

Other contributing causes include:

  • High cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • Long-term use of certain medications (e.g., steroids, tamoxifen)
  • Sudden and extreme weight loss
  • Toxin accumulation due to poor digestion and lifestyle choices

Symptoms to Watch For

Fatty liver often goes unnoticed until it becomes severe. However, some individuals may present with:

  • Heaviness or pain in the upper abdomen (right side)
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Poor appetite and indigestion
  • Nausea or bloating
  • Mild yellowing of skin or eyes in later stages
  • Unexplained weight gain or sluggishness

In Ayurvedic terms, these symptoms indicate Kapha Medo Dushti, low Agni, and buildup of Ama (toxins) in the Yakrit (liver).

Investigations for Fatty Liver

Early detection of fatty liver is crucial to prevent long-term damage. The following investigations are commonly recommended:

1. Liver Function Test (LFT):

Measures liver enzymes such as ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin levels, and albumin. Elevated ALT/AST may indicate inflammation or damage.

2. Ultrasound Abdomen (USG):

A non-invasive and most common method to detect liver fat. It shows a “bright” liver in fatty liver disease.

3. Fibroscan (Transient Elastography):

Advanced scan that measures liver stiffness and fat. Helps in identifying fibrosis or scarring.

4. Lipid Profile:

Assesses cholesterol and triglyceride levels. High values are often associated with NAFLD.

5. Fasting Blood Sugar and HbA1c:

Helps evaluate insulin resistance or prediabetes, often linked with fatty liver.

6. Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference:

Obesity and central fat are major risk factors for fatty liver.

7. Liver Biopsy (in advanced cases):

Rarely needed but considered the gold standard to assess the extent of fat, inflammation, and fibrosis.

At Ayusanjivani, we encourage integrating these diagnostic tools with Ayurvedic Roga-Nidana (clinical examination and dosha assessment) for a holistic understanding.
