Netra Tarpan Treatment in Pune – Ayurvedic Eye Nourishment & Rejuvenation Therapy
At Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre, we offer Netra Tarpan Treatment — a classical Ayurvedic Kriya Kalpa therapy that nourishes tired, dry, and strained eyes with warm medicated ghee, helping manage dry eyes, computer vision syndrome, early cataract, and other eye conditions naturally.
Ayurvedic Eye Therapy
What is Netra Tarpan Treatment?
Netra Tarpan Treatment (also called Akshi Tarpana) is a classical Ayurvedic ocular therapy in which warm, medicated ghee is retained over the closed-then-gently-opened eyes within a soft dough ring, for a specific duration determined by the practitioner. The word "Netra" means eyes, and "Tarpan" means nourishment or satiation — together describing a therapy whose purpose is to deeply nourish, lubricate, and rejuvenate every ocular structure it touches.
Netra Tarpan belongs to a group of seven classical eye procedures known as Netra Kriya Kalpa, described in Ayurvedic texts by Acharya Sushruta and Sharangdhara as the definitive local treatments for the eyes. Rooted in the principles of Rasayana (rejuvenation) and Chakshushya (eye-nourishing) therapy, Netra Tarpan is specifically indicated for conditions arising from aggravated Vata and Pitta dosha — the two doshas most responsible for dryness, heat, strain, and degeneration in the eyes.
If you are searching for Ayurvedic Netra Tarpan Treatment in Pune or an experienced Ayurvedic doctor in Wagholi or Kharadi, our team at Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre offers personalised Netra Tarpan therapy for dry eyes, digital eye strain, early cataract, and other vision-related concerns — using authentic herbal ghee formulations under clinical hygiene standards.

Types of Netra Kriya Kalpa
Netra Tarpan & the 7 Classical Ayurvedic Eye Therapies
Netra Tarpan is one of seven classical ocular procedures — collectively called Netra Kriya Kalpa — described by Acharya Sharangdhara for the complete care of the eyes. Our doctors select the right one (or combination) based on your specific condition.
Netra Tarpana
Warm medicated ghee is retained over the eyes within a dough-ring well, deeply nourishing ocular tissue. Considered the foremost of all Kriya Kalpas, it is classically described as inducing "Tarpanakam netra triptikaram" — the satisfaction and satiation of the eyes. Ideal for dryness, strain, and degenerative conditions.
Putapaka
A more intensive variant of Tarpana in which herbal ingredients are processed with egg or other bases, wrapped in leaves, and gently heated before the extracted juice is instilled into the eyes. It is used for deeper, more chronic ocular conditions requiring stronger rejuvenation than Tarpana alone.
Seka (Netra Dhara)
A continuous stream of medicated liquid — decoction, milk, or oil — is poured gently over the open eyes from a height. Seka is indicated in the acute, inflamed stage (Aamavastha) of eye disease, providing quick cooling relief in conditions like conjunctivitis and irritation.
Aschyotana
Medicated herbal eye drops are instilled into the eyes to cleanse, reduce inflammation, and relieve redness and irritation. Like Seka, Aschyotana is typically used during the acute or inflammatory phase of an eye condition before deeper nourishing therapies are introduced.
Anjana
Medicinal paste or powder is applied to the inner eyelid using a specialised applicator (Anjana Shalaka). Anjana is used both for maintaining healthy eyes as a daily preventive ritual (Dinacharya) and for treating specific eye disorders — one of the most frequently described Kriya Kalpas in classical texts.
Pindi
A herbal poultice or bolus is applied externally over the closed eyes to reduce swelling and inflammation. Pindi is generally used in the acute inflammatory stage, alongside Seka and Aschyotana, before proceeding to Tarpana-based rejuvenation once inflammation subsides.
Bidalaka
A medicated paste is applied over the eyelids and surrounding area (rather than the eyeball itself) and left to dry before removal. It targets eyelid-related conditions, reducing local inflammation and supporting the health of the tissue surrounding the eyes.
Among these seven, Seka, Bidalaka, and Aschyotana are generally used in the acute, inflamed stage of an eye condition (Aamavastha), while Tarpana, Putapaka, and Anjana are preferred once inflammation has settled (Niramavastha) — offering deeper rejuvenation of the eye tissue. Our doctors at Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre determine the right sequence of therapies for your specific stage and condition.
The Ayurvedic Perspective
How Ayurveda Understands Eye Health
Alochaka Pitta & the Eyes
In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered the primary seat of Alochaka Pitta — the subtype of Pitta dosha responsible for visual perception. When this fire element is disturbed by excessive screen exposure, pollution, heat, or stress, it manifests as dryness, redness, burning, and strain. At the same time, aggravated Vata dosha — driven by irregular sleep, aging, and digital overuse — dries out the delicate tissues of the eye and disturbs the nerve pathways connected to vision.
Classical texts describe conditions resembling modern computer vision syndrome under the umbrella of Sushkakshipaka (dry eye syndrome) — a Vata-Pitta disorder characterised by rough, dry eyelids, blurred vision, and difficulty opening the eyes after prolonged strain, which closely mirrors what millions of screen users experience today.
Netra Tarpan works precisely on this imbalance: the unctuous, cooling qualities of medicated ghee pacify aggravated Vata and Pitta simultaneously, while the herbal ingredients infused into the ghee nourish the deeper ocular tissues (Netra Sira, Netra Patala) responsible for clear, stable vision.
The Procedure
How Netra Tarpan is Performed
A gentle, structured process performed under expert supervision — here's what to expect during a Netra Tarpan session at Dr. Phalle's Ayusanjivani Ayurveda Centre.
Our Ayurvedic doctor evaluates your eye condition, dosha imbalance, and general health to determine the right medicated ghee and treatment duration for you.
A gentle massage is performed around the eye sockets to relax the surrounding muscles and improve absorption of the therapeutic ghee.
A soft ring made from black gram (urad dal) dough is carefully shaped and placed around each eye to form a leak-proof well.
Lukewarm herbal ghee — such as Triphala Ghrita or Jeevantyadi Ghrita — is gently poured into the well until it fully covers the eyes.
You are guided to slowly open and close your eyes within the ghee for the prescribed duration, allowing the medicament to bathe every ocular structure.
Once the session is complete, the ghee is carefully drained, and the eyes are cleansed with a sterile, warm cloth.
Our doctors provide specific instructions on screen use, diet, and follow-up sessions to help you sustain the benefits of the therapy.
